Arranging your child's Baptism

Arranging your Child’s Baptism

If you live in Hutton, we are pleased to welcome an enquiry about arranging baptism (christening) for your baby or child. To arrange this, please contact the Parish Office . We cannot normally baptise children whose family live outside the parish unless the parent(s) worship regularly at Hutton. There are no fees for Baptism services, although donations towards the work of the church are welcome, and a collection will be taken at the end of the service.

Baptisms normally take place at All Saints' Church on Sunday afternoons during the summer (March-October). During the winter months (November-February inclusive), baptisms are held at St. Peter's Church. Baptisms may also take place at the 9.30 am service at St Peter's Church or on other occasions by arrangement with the clergy.

Choosing your godparents

Each child should normally have at least three godparents : two of the same sex as the child and one of the opposite sex. There may not be more than six godparents. All godparents must be baptised (christened) and should also be confirmed. Godparents should usually be over 18 - please consult the clergy in advance if you are considering younger godparents. Details of the godparents' baptism must be provided on the application form. Failure to supply this information may result in the Baptism being delayed. Under no circumstances can unbaptised people stand as godparents.  Please note that services of dedication or thanksgiving conducted in some churches do not qualify as the equivalent of Christian baptism.

Baptism preparation

A week or two before the Baptism, the priest who will conduct the service will contact the parent(s) and arrange to visit at home and to meet your son/daughter. You will also receive a visit from one of our Baptism team during the week before the service. The visitor - a regular member of our congregation - will explain the service in more detail, and answer any questions you may have. These visits are friendly, relaxed and informal, and designed to help you understand and enjoy your child's baptism

The Welcome

We also invite parents to attend a Family Service at St. Peter's Church after the Baptism. At this service all those who have been baptised during the previous month are welcomed by the congregation and Baptism certificates are presented to the family. This is usually on the second Sunday of the month following the Baptism.

This is an important part of the Baptism and links newly-baptised children with the worshipping congregation.
